Why your fireplace smells in summer

Summer odors from your fireplace can be unpleasant and are usually caused by a combination of factors related to humidity and airflow.

Humidity and trapped creosote

During summer, rising humidity levels can mix with creosote residues in your chimney, producing unpleasant odors. Creosote builds up when wood burns and releases a smoky, tar-like substance that clings to chimney walls. The moisture interacts with this creosote, intensifying its smell.

To reduce these odors, it's important to have your chimney cleaned regularly. A professional sweep removes creosote buildup, reducing the chance of these smells occurring and improving the overall safety of your fireplace.

Negative air pressure

Negative air pressure in your home can also draw fireplace odors indoors. This often happens when windows and doors are closed tight, and exhaust fans like those in kitchens or bathrooms are running, pulling air down the chimney.

To combat negative pressure, try opening a window slightly when exhaust fans are in use, or consider using a chimney balloon. These solutions can help manage airflow and reduce offensive smells entering your home.

Blocked chimney or flue

Blockages like leaves, animal nests, or debris can also cause summer odors. When air can't flow freely through the chimney, it stagnates, allowing smells to linger rather than dissipating effectively.

Regular chimney inspections and the installation of a chimney cap can help prevent blockages, keeping your chimney clear and reducing the chance of unpleasant smells invading your living space.
