Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Selecting the right firewood can reduce creosote buildup, keeping your chimney cleaner and safer.

Choosing the Right Firewood

The type of firewood you burn significantly impacts the cleanliness of your chimney. Hardwoods like oak, maple, and birch are denser, providing longer and hotter burns with less smoke.

Burning seasoned wood, which has been dried for at least six months, reduces moisture content, leading to less creosote buildup and a cleaner flue.

Avoiding Softwoods

Softwoods like pine contain high levels of sap and produce more smoke and creosote, which can quickly accumulate in the chimney, increasing the risk of fires.

If softwoods must be used, ensure they are well-seasoned. However, prioritizing hardwoods significantly improves efficiency and safety.

Storage Best Practices

Proper storage of firewood is crucial to ensure it's adequately seasoned. Stack wood off the ground and cover the tops to protect from rain while leaving sides open for airflow.

Position your woodpile in a sunny spot, ideally covered, to speed up the drying process. Dry wood burns cleaner, keeping your flue clear of excess creosote and buildup.
